plugging along while waiting for the garden

I have been plugging along...jumping from project to project while waiting for warm weather.  The biggest project we've been working on is our staircase.  I didn't take any pictures-but our house is very old and the steps had actual rounded out grooves from years of people walking up and down them.  My husband and I fixed the bottom half of the staircase a couple years ago and I finally convinced him to take some time to finish the top half.  What a difference.  I have been slipping and falling down the stairs when I had my arms full of things for so long- and now I have level steps that I don't fall down!!  Hooray!!
I have also been slowly working on Houseworks kits for the kitchen of the 1960's themed dollhouse.  I have just been purchasing the basic pieces for right now until we build the house.  This was my very first time working with enamel paint and it was a big learning experience for me.  I think I really like how they are turning out- I haven't decided if I will need to tone down the gold color yet or not.  I will eventually have orange countertops.

I finished the mermaid rug for the bathroom in the Candy House.  It's hard to take pictures of this room because it's so small.

I found a small christmas ornament in my mini stash while I was cleaning so it got a new coat of paint and I glued a string and bead to it for a pull toy in the playroom of the Candy House.

I've been looking for a crocheted afghan for the Candy House for awhile and finally found one that matched the room perfectly.  It is incredibly fine and beautiful in person.  This is the link to the etsy shop I purchased it from- a very sweet and talented lady.  http://www.etsy.com/shop/MehitablesMiniatures

Then.....I was sidetracked.  My Mom sent me a package of items she thought I might like that she was getting rid of.  In the package was an old photo album.  It was not in the best of shape-the spine was crumbling and it had cracks in the cover.  I fixed the cover, ripped out the spine and rebound the old pages in between watercolor pages to make myself a new journal.  I am in love with it- it has re-sparked my interest in journaling...something I have been struggling with for awhile.  I am going to do the entire journal in the brown, cream, yellow, silver, gold and teal color scheme you can see I have started with.  It is such a joy to be working in a journal again and having fun with it instead of struggling.  The pages with the people in the middle are the original pages from the album where you would put a picture.

Before I go I thought I would show you a card I made for a wonderful couple that is celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.  I really hope they like it!  Hope the sun is shining where you live today!!!

Oh....and this is what my desk looks like in the craft room now- a major clean up is on tonight's agenda :)

WOW! I am loving that mermaid bathroom! Things in the mini world sure are looking up even if the real life weather isn't.

And 3 cheers for that repaired stairs! Hip hip hooray!Hip hip hooray!Hip hip HOORAY!

Thanks Sans :) You would not believe how many times I have fallen down those steps- thankfully its only about six steps and then a landing-so I didn't fall far. I can't believe the difference now when I go down them! I've been thinking of you and your training :)

That's a beautiful photo album cover and I love what you did to the spine. Your rug is a little jewel! I just finished building a fridge, sink cabinet and stove. I did not use enamel paint, just regular acrylic paint with loads of coats of Delta Ceramcoat gloss. I would have liked enamel paint but if I have to take four more buses to go to Michaels, I think I'll pass out. So I just used what I had.

Thank you so much Lucille! I have to admit that it may have been easier to use acrylic and then coats of gloss. I am pleased with how they turned out though and now I have a new skill-as I think enamel paint does take a special kind of patience and steady hand :) My first try I totally mucked up and had to get out the turpentine to try and save it! I hope one day you will share pictures of your house with me- I am always curious about it :) I imagine it is beautiful!!

So much you have reached.
Nice that you have been rigged stairs before things went really wrong.
Interesting that you have painted with enamel paint and I can almost see that orange will be fine for the yellow kitchen.
I love your blue bathroom, it is so fresh.
It's a super nice gift you made for the gold wedding couple. They will love it, it's obvious that you have put so much creativity and thoughtfulness of the gift.
I'm trying right now to clean up my office, but it is difficult to keep it.
Hugs

Hi Wyrna! Thank you so much for your nice comments- especially about the anniversary card. I do hope they love it--they are very kind and special people :) Good luck on your clean up...it's always the bad side of creating, isn't it :) hugs to you!!!

Dear Kim, I hope that one day my house will be beautiful! At the moment, it's just a shell. However, I have seriously restarted work on it. I will do one room at a time as if I were working on a room box. I have nine rooms to do. So that way, I won't feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the work still to be done. I have all the wiring and lights. I have had that for many years just waiting to be installed. I do hope the lights are still working. If not, then I'll just buy more. That's all. I'm not going to drive myself crazy for a few lights. Life is too short. Elizabeth of Studio E showed a few pics of it on her blog. There's really nothing much to see at the moment. I have started doing the floors with popsicle sticks and I like them very much. My house is going to be a lived-in house, not a showcase. The sort of house where you can tell the floors are being walked on.

I don't know about you but I have noticed that when I work on my house, I feel so happy. It's like this pent up creative energy that I have locked up within me comes out and I just feel so relaxed and content. I find also that when I work on my house that I sleep better at night because it gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Hi Claudia! I hope you are having a good week while you are away from home- I know you have been busy because I have been reading (and not commenting enough- I am a bad blogger a lot of the time). I think the easiest way to purchase them is on ebay- here is a link to one so you can see what it looks like:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kitchen-Sink-Kit-3431-Dollhouse-Miniature-/200913974142?pt=US_Dolls_Bears_Toys&hash=item2ec767f37e

I just put mine together with E6000-it was really simple. I painted mine with enamel paint-if you do that I recommend practicing with the paint on something else first. I found you need to paint it pretty thick and then step away from it even though you are tempted to play with it. When it dries it evens out. I think you could also do a few layers of acrylic and varnish it-but I didn't try that so not positive how it would turn out. They also sell the cabinet base as a kit or you can make your own base and set it into that. Hope that all made sense :) Have a wonderful day my friend!! Please email me if you have more questions and I would be thrilled to help more :)

Lucille,

I think your house will be beautiful-how could it not be when made with love?? I like your approach to the house-one "room box" at a time. I wish I was more disciplined. Sometimes I try-but it seems to work better for me if I just jump from thing to thing that interests me. When I try to concentrate hard on just finishing one thing I often hit a creative block and can't manage to do anything-so I just go on my crazy merry way-lol. I love dollhouses that have a lived in look- not that I don't admire houses that are showcases-but I think the personality of the builder comes through when they look lived in and to me part of the magic of dollhouses is the stories that go through your head when you look into them :) I am with you on the feelings of happiness that happen when you work on minis. Sometimes I lose track of time. I think being able to create things is one of the greatest gifts that God graced us with :) I always love your comments Lucille-thank you so much for always taking the time to leave them for me. ♥

Hi Chris :) I am the same way- I try to be good about blogging but it's hard to find the balance between work, creating and blogging. Soon it will be warm and I'll be throwing gardening in the mix-lol. I was so glad to see your post though-hope you are well and happy ♥

Hi Kim, it is great to hear your stairs is done! Take care, before the rest is done.
Your bathroom looks wonderful Is this your first attempt to paint with the enamel paint? Love the bright color, it suits the orange color, I think. These colors in combination with the brown wood do remind me of the 70s ;)!
I love your ideas about the photo album cover, it looks good.
Hugs, Ilona

Kim said...

Hi Ilona!! What a difference it has been with those stairs- I cannot believe I never hurt myself too badly :) Thank you for your sweet comment- it was my first attempt with enamel paint and I had a lot of learning to do! I messed up the first try and had to do some practicing before trying again :) Hope you are having lovely days- I think warm weather is finally here to stay :) hugs to you!!!!

Hi Kim! I am so glad that you and your husband finally were able to get the stairs repaired. That is the chief cause of household accidents and serious injuries and you have already experienced going down the wrong way. I am grateful that you will not have to worry about that any longer! Your projects are moving along nicely too. It is amazing how some good weather can re energize us and get us going once again. Your little mermaid rug turned out really well and looks good in your bathroom. Nice to get something else done and off your list ?
